UK Start UP visa requirements

In order to qualify under this category, you must ensure that your business is:

  • Innovative- There has to be something about your business.
  • Viable- You must have a business that is commercially viable. For example, if you are in a start up, you will need to show immediate source of funds or a quick pathway to profitability. Also you will need to show that you have the necessary skills to make the business successful.
  • Scalable- You have got to have a vision for significant growth in the coming years. The endorsing body will expect to see you give back to the national market, this could be through job creation and growth.
  • And importantly, that it supported by an approved endorsing body. The idea behind this is that the Government is outsourcing the decision-making process, the private sector (endorsing bodies) will decide who is a real entrepreneur and who is not. Before approaching an endorsing body, you will need ensure that you have a detailed business plan that persuades the body to endorse you.
Your Business plan

The business plan will need to include some of the following:

  • Title page- this will include the business name, proposed address, logo and the applicant’s name.
  • The executive summary- this should be approximately 2 pages long. It is recommended that you write this last as it is an overview of the entire business. It should provide a summary and vision for your business.
  • Table of contents- you should make sure that your business plan is presented in the correct format.
  • Business objectives.
  • Market Research.
  • Your Marketing plan- SWOT analysis and PESTEL analysis. You should include forecasted sale targets.
  • The financial plan.
Does a Start up Visa lead to settlement?

The Start-Up visa will be issued for a 2-year period. A Start-Up visa does not lead to settlement. However, the idea is that if your business succeeds during this time period, you will be able to switch into the Innovator visa category, which does lead to settlement. When you switch into the innovator visa, you will essentially be re-endorsed and will not need to demonstrate the availability of £50,000, which you would have to do if you were applying for an innovator visa directly.

Is there an English language requirement?

You will need to demonstrate your knowledge of English language by completing an approved English language test at level B2. You must not fall for refusal under the general grounds of refusal. If you are from a majority English speaking country, you will not be required to demonstrate your knowledge of English; If you have a qualification that is equivalent to a UK degree that was taught in English, you will need to provide a UK NARIC letter confirming the same;

Do you need to invest any funds to obtain a UK start up visa?

You are not required to invest funds in your business. However, in order for your business to be viable, you will need to demonstrate a source of funding

Maintenance requirements

required to have at least £945 as the main applicant, your dependents will need to show £630 each. This amount can be held is several accounts however, must be in your account for 90 consecutive days.
