Denied Entry to The UK

Denied Entry to The UK

An immigration official can deny you entry to the UK at the border, even if you have valid entry clearance. Nationals of certain countries do not require a visa before travelling to the UK and are referred to as non-visa nationals.
The following countries are considered as being non-visa nationals: Australia, Canada, Hong Kong (SAR), Japan, Malaysia, New Zealand, Singapore, South Africa, South Korea and the USA.
Nationals of Kuwait, Oman, Qatar or the United Arab Emirates require an electronic visa waiver or a valid standard visitor visa before entering the UK.

Can I still be denied entry at the airport?

Nationals are still subject to immigration control and can be denied entry by a border officer. Typically, the reason behind this can be:
  • Previous issues with your immigration history.
  • No onward travel plans.
  • Your leave could be curtailed.
  • Issues with your travel documents.

What could happen at the airport?

If you are denied entry, you may be held at the airport, and immigration officials will make preparations for you to be returned to the country you departed from. We recommend that you request the reasons for the refusal and obtain the relevant information. Your luggage could be searched and questioned by an immigration officer. We recommend that you cooperate with officials and stay calm throughout. Alternatively, officials can send you to an Immigration Detention Centre.

Can you assist me?

Being denied at the border can cause inconvenience. More importantly, however, it can have lasting consequences and will be reflected in your immigration history moving forward. This can be frustrating, especially if you visit the UK on a regular basis. If you have any questions about the process or have been denied entry, please contact us.
